Serious Play Improv Lab (SPIL 016) is happy to host two rare guests from Montréal, Canada in its August lab! Elizabeth Millar (clarinet) and Craig Pedersen (trumpet) is joining SPIL 016, together with Kuala Lumpur based musicians Max Riefer (percussion) from Germany, Nathan Fischer (guitar) from USA and our very own YONG Yandsen (tenor sax). ABOUT THE MUSICIANS:

ELIZABETH MILLAR is a clarinet player and improviser living in Montreal, Canada. With a background in klezmer music she is now active in improvised music in Montreal. She has studied with clarinetist Lori Freedman and saxophonist and vocalist Joane Hétu. She has performed across Canada with the theatrical folk-circus band Sapo. She choses to create and explore sonic spaces, developing an innovative and unorthodox approach to her instrument.

CRAIG PEDERSON is trumpet player and experimental musician living in Montréal, Canada. Since 2011, Craig has released nine albums, ranging between composed material to improvisation, through jazz, free music, country, and klezmer, in a variety of ensembles. Recent highlights of this work have included collaborations and/or performances with Joe Morris, Jean Derome, Joane Hetu, Lori Freedman, Nicolas Caloia, Ian Birse and Laura Kavanaugh (Instant Places), and Mark Molnar (Kingdom Shore). His method book exploring extended techniques for the trumpet, Trumpet Sound Effects, was published by Berklee Press and Hal Leonard in November of 2014.

MAX RIEFER founded his first new music ensemble at the age of 18. Currently, he is the percussionist with Inverspace (Switzerland) and Zero Crossing (Germany/Singapore). He has also played with renowned groups like Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt) or Zeitkratzer (Berlin). Max Riefer is “Chair of Percussion Studies” at UiTM Faculty of Music/Malaysia. Previously, he was lecturer on the percussion faculty at Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. Furthermore, he had been invited as guest lecturer at the Birmingham Conservatoire (UK); Toho Gakuen School of Music; Tokyo Ongaku Daigaku (Japan) or the National University of Singapore amongst others. Performances at international festivals including “MaerzMusik” (Berlin), “Tokyo Experimental Festival” (Japan), “Wien Modern” (Austria), or “two days and two nights of new music” (Odessa, Ukraine). Premieres by composers like Dieter Mack, Peter Edwards, Nicolaus A. Huber or Keiko Harada. Collaborations with musicians such as flutist Robert Aitken, guitarist Nathan Fischer, percussionists Bob Becker, Emmanuel Sejourné, or Fritz Hauser. His first solo album will be released in 2016.

Born in the USA, Dr. NATHAN FISCHER is currently a Senior Lecturer with the Faculty of Music at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), in Shah Alam, Malaysia. Prior to teaching at UiTM, Dr. Fischer was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the American University in Cairo, Egypt and the Egypt National Conservatory. His primary area of research is in classical guitar and Egyptian oud performance. With research grants from the Binational Fulbright Commission in Egypt and AUC, his research has led him to more than a dozen countries and highlighting Egypt, Venezuela, and Malaysia. Nathan is an advocate for the performance of new music and has maintained a strong record for commissioning and performing new works. Dr. Fischer holds a DMA and MM, from the Eastman School of Music, and a BM from George Mason University.

YONG YANDSEN is an improvised saxophonist. He has played at the Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, Mosaic Festival Singapore, Choppa Eclectic Improvised Music Festival, Turn Around Free Jazz & Improvisation Festival amongst others. Yandsen, together with Darren Moore and Brian O’Reily, form an improvised trio called Game of Patience. They have toured to Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. They recently release their debut album “Trial and Error” on Herbal International label in Malaysia.
